Zaeeda
Watching my favourite movie Dances with Wolves was where my dream of owning a horse began. I always wanted a horse just like Cisco, a buckskin quarter horse who had an amazing bond with his new charge Lieutenant John Dunbar. While living in Melbourne it wasn't a very practical dream for me to pursue so I put it aside, but not completely, it was always there and I knew that one day I would have one when the time was right.
I'm no longer living in Melbourne, and just before Christmas last year I went with my parents to visit Judy Oldmeadow and her Morgan horses at Samaria Creek, and pretty soon my dream was to became a reality. I was intrigued with Judy's concept that her horses chose "you", I loved the idea of that straight away. I hadn't had a great deal of experience with horses and what experience I did have left me quite intimidated by them - the sheer size of them, and the fact that they can potentially really hurt you. That previous experience was with a beautiful flighty Arab gelding a friend of mine owned, and I soon understood that the breed and temperament of a horse makes the world of difference. A few months ago I wouldn't have imagined that I would be standing in a round yard at Samaria Creek surrounded by 7 magnificent horses feeling completely comfortable.
On Boxing Day I met S.C. Zaeeda and my dream finally became a reality. Zaeeda was nothing at all like Cisco from Dances with Wolves of course, she was even more beautiful and she "chose" me, and that was even better. The feeling I had I can't describe other than it was "love at first sight", I was totally in awe, her stunning elegance just took my breath away, and she responded to "me". Every spare moment I've had since I have returned to Samaria Creek to visit Zaeeda, and each visit I can feel our bond becoming stronger. When I arrive Zaeeda appears out of the herd to greet me, I don't even have to look for her, she finds me. She's very cheeky and she tests me, but I love that in her and I look forward to every moment I spend with her building our relationship.
At 38 years, my visit to Judy's at Samaria Creek Morgan Farm has been a timely life changing experience for me. Mum and Dad had told me what an amazing person Judy was and the relationship she has with her Morgan horses was incredibly inspiring. And they were right! Judy is amazing and has become a great friend, and Samaria Creek Morgan Farm is like going to another world, where dreams come true and time flies by way too fast.
